EFFECTS OF NEGATIVE IONS ON COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE

There are many cognitive factors that come into play when evaluating things that could potentially affect an individual’s cognitive performance. Cognitive factors are those characteristics of a person that affect the way they learn and perform.

Negative ion affects individual’s cognitive performance

Testing has regularly shown that people exposed to high levels of negative ions perform better in mentally challenging tasks than those breathing normal positive ion dense air. Pierce J. Howard PhD at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences says in the Owner’s Manual for the Brain – “Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.”

As noted in the research undertaken by Toyota in 2002, negative-ion exposure can increase cognitive performance. Years before this publication, however, researchers R.A. Duffee and RH. Koontz were investigating ions and witnessing similar results. In 1965, they published a study in Psychophysiology that tested the effects of negatively ionized air on the cognitive functioning of rats. The study found that the rats’ abilities to navigate a water maze proved by an average of 350 percent with negative ion exposure, which suggested a significant boost in cognitive ability. Moreover, the performances of the older rats living in a negatively ionized atmosphere showed even more improvement.
